Massachusetts is surrounded on the north by Vermont and New Hampshire ; on the south by Connecticut and Rhode Island; on the west by New York;and on the east by the Atlantic.
Most of the province is highlands of impervious metamorphous rock that were abraded by Glacial epoch glaciers that wedged moraines and outwash on a great, granulose, arm-shaped peninsula called Cape Cod and the islands Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in the south of Cape Cod. Highland heights increment in the north and west and the most eminent place in the province is Mount Greylock at 3,491 feet (1,064 m) near the province’s northwestern corner.
Boston is situated at the inmost spot of Massachusetts Bay, at the sassing of the Charles River, the most longsighted river wholly inside Massachusetts. Most of the population of the Bean Town metropolitan region (approximately 4.4 million) does not domiciliate in the urban center proper; oriental Massachusetts all in all is moderately densely inhabited and for the most part suburban as far western as Worcester.
Central Massachusetts comprehends Worcester County, and lets in the cities of Gardner, Worcester, Leominster, Fitchburg, Southbridge and modest highland towns, timberlands, and little farms. The Quabbin artificial lake bounds the occidental lateral of the county, and is the main water provision for the oriental part of the state.
The Pioneer Valley along the Connecticut River in occidental Bay State is urbanised from the Connecticut River border (and larger capital of Connecticut) to north as far as Northampton, and admits Westfield, West Springfield, Springfield, Agawam, Chicopee, and Holyoke.
Pioneer Valley economic system and population was shaped by agriculturally fertile Connecticut River vale ground in the seventeenth and eighteenth century, water power for the technological revolution in the nineteenth century and enlargement of higher education in the twentieth century.
